Now I bet no one thought we would become even more reliant on technology than we were before, but then 2020 came and proved us all wrong! With everyone’s screen time at an all-time high during the global pandemic which has caused different restrictions and lockdowns, it’s no wonder that blue light blocking glasses are such a thing right now.
We literally see all over Instagram and Facebook every day, all day. Not only is this new breakthrough accessory functional, but it’s fabulous at the same time. Whatever your look of choice, from uber stylish to funky or quirky – there are so many different styles to choose from. Now I for one, as a girl that always desperately wanted to wear glasses (and braces funnily enough), and never needed to – I don’t need to be asked twice to try out this new trend.
How do these actually work, you ask?
Well, I am certainly not an optometrist myself nor qualified in explaining the exact science behind it, but a quick Google search will tell you that they are equipped with filters in their lenses that block or absorb blue light and in some cases even UV light. What that basically means, is, when you wear blue light glasses and look at a screen on any device that exposes blue light (smartphones, laptops, computers and good old TV), it helps reduce the exposure to blue light that may be keeping you up at night.
Overexposure of blue light can cause – amongst trouble sleeping – digital eye strain, headaches, and blurred vision.
The brand I tried and tested is Stella+Gemma, a brand curated in New Zealand. They carry a fresh and innovative range, with a New York influence. My style of choice was the Amara in matte black, and the Mila tortoiseshell (one colour simply won’t do because, ‘fashun’).
Now do these actually work?
There is currently no actual evidence available to say that they do prevent eye damage or fatigue. The advice available is to reduce your exposure by taking regular breaks and to wear the glasses (LOL). I personally have been wearing mine whenever working on my laptop or scrolling on my iPhone, and I must say even if no research exists to justify that it actually works, I look and feel fabulous wearing them (I don’t mind all the compliments either), slightly more intelligent, and I will happily continue to wear these as part of my everyday style.
Stay safe, fabulous and always comfortable!
